Alicia noticed him from the moment he first walked into the center.

She was the director of the nonprofit workforce center and she had just finished a presentation she gave to members of the board. As she walked out of the boardroom and saw him at the front desk she found herself straightening up trying to make her 5’6” slender figure not slouch and look even more presentable than she already did in her gray suit.

She thought the handsome gentleman, who reminded her quite a bit of the R&B singer Jon B., looked familiar. When he turned and looked at her passing by, she silently acknowledged him with a smile and a slight nod, and he responded with the same gestures. It did not click at first, but once she got in her office and sat down it all came back to her:

Ten years ago on campus in undergrad around 2:30 AM in her university apartment. Alicia had just gotten home from her night job on campus and had brought home a pizza to have for a very late dinner to kick off her weekend. He must have seen her from his apartment because less than two minutes later he was knocking on her door. His name was Jeff Young—in undergrad he was known as J. Young, or often just “Jay”.

  J. Young was what some would have, and most likely did back then, referred to as a wigger; this was a term used to describe a white guy who most likely grew up in the suburbs whose mannerisms, style, and interests emulated the black hip-hop culture. He was very handsome: about 5’9”, possibly a decent figure (it was hard to tell underneath his baggy clothes), a short, dark, faded haircut, and a fine, thin mustache and goatee.

Alicia did not run in the same circles as he did, sticking more closely to her sorority and Greek-life festivities, but she would sometimes see him at some of the campus events. Once she moved into the apartment complex she saw more of him. Jay lived only two buildings over. It seemed as if all he did was hang outside his apartment smoking, drinking and just passing the time with his friends until it was time to call it a night and then prepare for another day of classes and the life of a college student.

At first Jay and his friends would just stare and not say too much of anything to Alicia or Sarah, her roommate. One day Alicia broke the ice as she came home one evening to a bunch of stares from Jay and his crew. This time instead of turning her head and walking briskly into her place, Alicia slowly stepped out of the car, turned her direction back toward the group of men, and stared right back at them. This caused them to stop all chitter chatter and practically made most of them turn their heads away for once.

As soon as they did that, Alicia kindly greeted them with a wave and a warm, “Hello, gentlemen.”

At first they did not say anything, but as Alicia turned around to head toward her front door of her place, she heard the group of men respond back with “what’s up”, “hello”, “hey sista”, and other various forms of greetings. From that point on a camaraderie had formed with her apartment complex neighbors and that opened the door for Jay to boldly knock on her door that late Friday evening when he saw Alicia get out of her car.

When Alicia responded to the knock and saw that it was Jay at the door it surprised her and she was not quite sure if she should trust letting him in. Sarah had gone home to visit family, as she did most weekends, so Alicia was preparing to have some peace and have the place to herself.

Although she thought Jay was cool, she did wonder what his reason was for wanting to pay her a visit now, at this hour. She had an idea that she quickly brushed off, but Alicia would find that she was not too far off. From the time Jay walked in the door, he and Alicia talked about everything from school, graduation plans, interests and more while they ate pizza, drank beer, and listened to the radio.

Alicia had previously assumed that Jay was not sincere in the way he carried himself, in an attempt to try to fit in for whatever reason. After over an hour or so of conversing with him about his upbringing and more, Alicia was convinced he really had been around black culture and felt a part of it. That made her warm up to him more.

It was almost 3:30 am and although they were having good conversation, Alicia was trying to figure out a polite way to tell Jay that he needed to leave. She was ready to pass out in her bed and get some much needed rest. He must have read her mind because his timing was perfect when he stood up and told Alicia he had really enjoyed getting to know her and hoped that she would let him take her out one day soon.

Alicia agreed, although not truly believing he would follow up on that suggestion, and walked him to the door. When he asked for a hug, Alicia gladly leaned in for the gesture, but she was not expecting the kiss that followed; she did not stop him, either.

Jay’s soft lips felt good against hers. It had been quite some time since Alicia had kissed anyone, considering that her last relationship had been during her second year and that relationship only lasted for a semester. Alicia was now one semester away from graduation and barely had time for anything else but school, work, and her internship. This bit of affection was something that she now realized she had missed.

Jay started off with a slow, light peck; when Alicia did not appear to object he must have thought it was fine to continue the kiss as he leaned in again, lightly pulling Alicia into him. She went right along with it, too, but as much as she was enjoying kissing, her mind reminded her how she barely knew him.

“Jay, we need to stop—I’m sorry,” Alicia said after slowly pulling way.

“There’s no need to apologize—I’m sorry,” he responded as he grabbed her hand to kiss it. “I just could not resist tasting those beautiful lips.”

This made Alicia smile as Jay smiled back, said his goodbyes, and stepped out of her apartment to head back to his own for the evening. Alicia did not go to sleep for another hour or so as she lay in bed thinking about their kiss and imagining how his lips would feel on other various parts of her chocolate brown body.

Alicia also realized that this was the first time that she had ever kissed a white guy, which is something that she never thought would happen to her. She came from a town where the population was predominantly African-American; college had introduced her to a more diverse environment with many races and cultures, but she still primarily stayed close to circles that she was most familiar with—in most cases that meant not seeing too many white men. Jay was the exception in this case.

Alicia would not see Jay again until the following weekend that Saturday evening. Again, he must have seen her enter her apartment from spending the night out hanging with her sorority sisters. It was almost midnight this time around, and Alicia saw Jay as soon as she stepped out of her car.

This had been the first time she had seen him since his visit over a week ago, and a part of her was a little irritated with him because he did not try stopping by or making his presence known during the week. Still, she looked in his direction, smiled, waved and turned around to sashay off before Jay even had a chance to respond.

About 15 minutes later he was knocking on her door, which Alicia was hoping he would sometime that evening. Alicia had made up her mind that if Jay tried to kiss her and make out with her, she would let him get a little farther this time, but make it clear to him that she was not going all the way with him. She wanted to make sure he was about the right thing, which was getting to know her better and working toward something more than just trying to knock the boots, as they said back then.

So far, so good; Jay and Alicia chatted like they did before and decided to watch a movie on cable while cuddling on the couch with the lights turned off. It was nice and romantic, and Alicia was beginning to think that Jay might have the potential to be around in her life a bit longer.

During the end of the movie, Jay excused himself to go to the restroom. During this time alone on the couch, Alicia went back and forth with herself on whether or not she should make a move on him this time by initiating a kiss. She was ready to feel his lips and hands on her. Although she appreciated his being the perfect gentleman, Alicia was longing for more at that moment, or so she thought.

When Jay stepped out of the restroom, Alicia’s mouth dropped open.

Jay was nude with the exception of his white briefs and white socks. In addition to that being awkward enough, he walked back over toward the couch as if nothing was different; he even looked puzzled at Alicia’s response and expression.

  “What’s wrong, baby?”

  “Um, where are your clothes?”

“Does it really matter?” Jay said as he stepped in front of Alicia with his crotch positioned directly in her face. He continued to step in her space a little closer by widening her legs. “Isn’t this what you want?”

“No! What makes you think that?” Alicia responded frustrated. She could not believe the nerve of this fool. He was making it clear what his real intentions were, and although she was attracted to him, she was more pissed than anything right now.

“Come on, you know you want this,” Jay said as he rubbed his penis through the briefs. As he reached inside his briefs as if to reveal himself, Alicia grabbed the rolled up newspaper on the other end of the couch and raised it as if she was prepared to use it on him.

“If you pull your dick out, I will knock it the fuck off! Really, try me.”

Jay chuckled at first, but when he did reveal his penis his hand was met with the hard end of the newspaper in Alicia’s hand.

“Ouch! Are you crazy?! That shit hurt!” Jay said as he grabbed his hand.

“And you’re lucky that I just hit your hand. Now put your dick away! I don’t know who you think I am, but I’m not the one,” Alicia said as she raised the newspaper again for another blow.

Jay put his penis back into his briefs and headed for the restroom, accusing Alicia of being a tease. After he came back out fully dressed, Jay immediately left and she never heard from him after that.

Following that incident, she did see Jay and his crew hanging outside his apartment as usual, and she still continued to wave. Although his friends responded to her, Jay would just remain silent and then she would hear the sound of snickering. Alicia assumed that he most likely lied about getting in her panties, to make himself look good. She did not have to deal with that immaturity for too long because weeks later she was graduating and moving on.

Alicia never saw him again, and thought that she never would, but here he was now, 10 years later in her center that she ran. Apparently, they both felt the need to remain in their college town to pursue adult lives and careers.

Maybe he doesn’t remember me, Alicia thought to herself, as she was hoping he was not the appointment she had coming up in the next five minutes. She was to meet with a contractor about updating the computer system and programming in the center.

Alicia checked her online calendar to double check who she was going to be meeting with exactly—the name listed on her calendar was Jeff Young.

  ~ ~ ~

As Jay approached her desk extending her hand, Alicia began to think that maybe the meeting would run smoothly after all; he did not appear to remember her, if she had to go by his present, friendly expression. He began his presentation about his services and ways to improve the technology in the center, and Alicia was genuinely impressed and agreed to becoming one of his clients. After the timeline was established and the paperwork was signed, things took an unexpected turn.

  “So, Ms. Peters—Alicia Peters, correct?”

Alicia hesitated at first, realizing that Jay did in fact remember her.

“Yes, it is Alicia. I’m glad to see that life has been treating you good, Jeff, or should I refer to you as J. Young?” Alicia said with a smirk.

“Yes, life has been blessed, and you look even more beautiful than ever, Alicia. Oh, and J. Young was a college thing. Please call me Jeff,” he responded with a big smile as he extended his hand again to her.

Alicia accepted it and returned the smile.

“I am somewhat embarrassed because I realize the last time I saw you that I was being an asshole, pardon the expression. I was young and dumb. I hope that we can get past that and work together still.”

“That was a decade ago Jeff, and I appreciate the fact that you apologized. Let’s not even mention it again.”

From there, Alicia and Jeff started their work relationship together, which was scheduled to last for three months according to the contract.

At first it was all business, but as the time passed they found themselves sometimes reminiscing over the college years. Jeff would stop by Alicia’s office at the end of the day to say his goodbyes for the evening, but these brief exchanges would turn into extended conversations.

Alicia found out that Jeff was a divorcee and father of one child; since his divorce over a year ago he had remained single while trying to grow his business. When Jeff showed Alicia a picture of his little girl on his cell phone, Alicia was not the least bit surprised to see a beautiful, mixed-race girl with long curly hair; he may have gotten rid of the nickname, but he still remained faithful toward his love for black women. It should have been evident to her by the way Jeff looked at her; everyone else seemed to notice but her.

“So Alicia, what’s up between you and sexy white chocolate?” Carissa said to Alicia over lunch one afternoon, months later.

Alicia almost choked on her drink from the comment, which caused Carissa to chuckle. Although Carissa was her assistant in the office, outside of the office they had become good friends; Alicia’s social life, which was barely existent, did not include too many friends so the few she had came about through her being at the center.

“What do you mean?” Alicia played clueless. When Jeff started coming to her office more as the weeks passed, Alicia wondered if Carissa noticed, although Carissa never said anything until now.

“Alicia, please! This is me! Actually, it could be anyone in the office for that matter. Everyone knows that Jeff is feeling you. You, on the other hand, are playing it off pretty well. I can’t tell what you’re feeling for him but inquiring minds sure do want to know.”

Alicia had been feeling some kind of way since Jeff made his way back into her life, and she was ready to tell someone about it. Alicia decided to start from the beginning and give Carissa the short version of what happened in the past, as well as going into how close they had been getting as of late. Jeff had three more weeks left on the job and Alicia was dreading seeing him leave.

“So why don’t you ask him out?” Carissa suggested.

“Carissa, I don’t ask guys out—they ask me out. I’m traditional in that way.”

“Which is probably why you are single and lonely in that way, too.”

Sometimes Alicia loved how Carissa was straightforward and to the point, but sometimes she hated it when she told her the truth about herself.

“Who says I’m lonely?” Alicia said defensively.

“I’m just saying, here is a man you would like to get closer to so, why n
ot do something about it since he doesn’t appear to be doing it. Maybe he won’t make the move because of how he came on so strong back in college. Have you thought of that?”

Alicia actually had not given that reasoning any thought whatsoever and felt foolish now that it had been suggested to her. Jeff did seem interested, even flirting to a certain extent, but he never went much beyond that. Considering how things ended before, it would make sense for him to not push his luck this time around.

Before Alicia could even acknowledge what Carissa said, Carissa nodded her head and said, “You don’t even have to say it—I know I’m right. What would you do without me?”

  ~ ~ ~

When Alicia got back to work that day, she contemplated how she would go about setting up something with Jeff outside of work. As she pondered different lines and scenarios, Jeff got her attention by waving through the glass door at her; she motioned for him to come in, which he did not hesitate to do.

“Hey, Carissa said you wanted to see me?”

“She did?” Alicia asked astonished. She should have known Carissa would do something to speed things up whether she wanted her to or not.

“Yeah, but before you say anything else, I have something I need to get off of my chest, Alicia. I hope it does not change the way we have been getting along these past couple of months.”

Alicia’s heart sank as she imagined the worst; what if he had met someone?

  “What is it, Jeff?”

“I realize my end date is coming very fast, and in a way I’m sad about it but also very happy. I’m happy because that will end our working relationship.”

“Ok…” Alicia responded, somewhat confused and trying not to be offended. So is he saying he doesn’t want to be around me anymore, she thought to herself.

“That didn’t quite come out right; as soon as I saw your expression I knew it sounded bad. What I’m saying is, now that we won’t be working together anymore, can I take you out on a date?”
